Government To Convert Borteyman Sports Complex Into A University For Sports Development – Sports Minister

The Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has disclosed government’s intention to convert the Borteyman Sports Complex into a full University for Sports development in Ghana. According to the Minister, the decision forms part of the government’s plans to properly maintain the facilities, ensure sustainability and position the country as a sports hub within the West African Sub-region.

“To ensure that the facilities are well maintained for the continuous benefit of the good people of Ghana, the facilities at Borteyman will be converted to a university for sports and I have mentioned on countless occasions that the vision of the Republic of Ghana is to ensure that once we finish with the games, we convert those facilities to a university for sports to ensure sustainability and legacy of the games”.

The Minister made this revelation at a press briefing session on Monday, March 4, at the Ministry of Information press center in Accra.

He told the media that, the completion of sporting facilities for the hosting and organization of the 13th African Games, Accra, 2023 underscores the commitment of His Excellency, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to the development of sports in Ghana. Hon. Mustapha Ussif cited the Aquatic Centre as one of its kind in the whole of Africa adding that it will make Ghana a center of sports development on the continent.

He indicated that other facilities, such as hostels, football pitches, cafeterias and a medical center will be added to the facility.

“Additionally, infrastructure such as hostel facilities, football pitches, cafeterias, and medical center’s will be provided at the site to attract local and foreign federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions”, he said.

The Minister was confident that the facility including that of the University of Ghana will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions and position Ghana as a sports hub within the West African sub-region.

“The expectation is that once we finish these games, we should use the facilities that we have gotten to drive more traffic for competitions here in Ghana”, he noted.
