The Vice-President, His Excellency Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and wife, Samira Bawumia have taken their first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine today at the Police Hospital.

This was after the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his wife Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo received theirs earlier at the 37 Military Hospital.

Dr. Bawumia, after taking the vaccine asked all Ghanaians to be cooperative with the vaccination process, adding that the naysayers spreading conspiracies about the vaccine should be disregarded. He indicated that the government aimed to vaccinate 20 million Ghanaians.

“We are taking the vaccine today to assure the public that the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine is safe. Doing this will ensure that we are all protected as a nation. This is to protect the people and the economy as a whole. It is in our collective interest to take the vaccine,” Dr Bawumia emphasized.

He noted that the hard work of the Ghana Health Service and the COVID-19 task force put together by the President has made this possible for Ghana to receive the vaccine.

He added that Ghana was the first country to receive vaccines from the COVID-19 Vaccine Global (COVAX) Facility, which was opened to about 92 low and middle income countries.

The two vaccines approved for use in Ghana are the AstraZeneca and Sputnik V.
