The UNICEF Representative in Ghana, Osama Makkawi Khogali has described Ghana as a trendsetter on global issues.
He made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Information, Honourable. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah yesterday at the Ministry of Information.
Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali applauded Ghana for being the first to sign the Convention of the right of the Child and pledged UNICEF’S support to continue to work with Ghanaian institutions to shore up support for the Ghanaian child.
Hon. Oppong Nkrumah pledged government support to work with UNICEF in the area of child protection and wellbeing. The minister cited the School Feeding Programme, Capitation grant, and the Free Senior High School Programme as some of the many social interventions which demonstrate the importance the Government places on the Ghanaian child.
“The Government of Ghana will continue to place emphasis on the Ghanaian Child”, the Minister for Information said.
Ghana signed the Convention of the Rights of the Child on 29th January 1990 and one week later, on 5th February 1990, Ghana became the first country in the world to ratify the treaty – committing to adopt it into national law.
