The Ministry of Information hosted a successful breast cancer awareness and screening event as part of its Client Service Week celebration on October 17, 2024, at the Press Center.

This initiative, aimed at encouraging early detection and providing vital information on breast cancer. Dr. Sandra Ashong, a Health Management Officer (HMO) from the LEKMA Hospital delivered a detailed presentation on the disease, its symptoms, and the importance of routine screenings.

Dr. Ashong explained that breast cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the breast, which, if detected early, can be managed effectively.

“Breast cancer is a very real threat, but early detection saves lives. Getting screened regularly can significantly reduce mortality, she said.

The session also featured a practical demonstration of self-examination techniques, and staff were encouraged to perform regular checks and seek medical attention if they noticed any concerning changes.

She Highlighted the various risk factors including age, genetic mutations, and family history, stressing that both women and men are prone to the disease. Men, though affected at lower rates, are often diagnosed at more advanced stages due to lower awareness.

“Invasive breast cancer can spread beyond the breast tissues into nearby areas, making it essential for us to detect it at its earliest stages”, she noted.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where Dr. Ashong addressed concerns regarding breast cancer complications, treatment options, and preventive measures.

As part of the celebration, staff were also given free breast cancer screening, underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to the health and well-being of its staff.
