Minister for Information, Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar has emphasized the need for collaborative effort between government and the media to combat information disorder which is inimical to our peace and security.
She indicated that fake news, misinformation and disinformation have the potential of disturbing the country’s peace by inhibiting the flow of accurate and reliable information.
“The effect of information disorder is as dangerous as the COVID-19 pandemic, hon. Abubakar reiterated”.
She appealed to the media to help explore ways to combat the challenges and promote fact-based reporting.
The minister offered to also provide regular briefings and updates to ensure the media has access to timely and accurate information and assured journalists of their safety through collaborations with security agencies and the coordinated mechanism on the safety of journalists by the Ministry.
Hon. Abubakar made the remarks during her familiarization visit to the Despite Media Group and the Ghana News Agency yesterday.
The minister admonished the media to continue to advocate for their rights and interest and assured them of government’s commitment to ensure the security and safety of journalists and investigate any threats or attacks on them.
The key concerns raised by the management of the two organizations from the included the lack of information flow from government to enable timely reportage of accurate information by the media, the limited opportunities for growth and development in the media industry and the protection of journalists.
Honourable Abubakar acknowledged the challenges and assured the media of government’s commitment to improving information flow and supporting media freedom.
The Minister entreated them to take advantage of the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) to build capacities and promote growth of the industry.
She acknowledged the critical role of the media in promoting the broadcasting bill and encouraged them to continue advocating for its passage.
