The Minister for Information, Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar has advised the media to collaborate with government and relevant stakeholders to devise innovative ways to address the increasing financing gap within the media industry. According to the Minister, this will help media owners meet the growing demand in the changing trend in traditional and electronic media.
The Minister gave these remarks when she paid a courtesy call on the management of the Statesman as part of a media tour in Accra. The visit was to engage management on its operations, challenges and strengthen collaboration.
Hon. Abubakar noted the importance of innovation, technology, and continual upgrade to stay relevant in the industry especially in the face of huge operational cost. The Minister encouraged the management to consider funding proposals on creating columns or space to feature Government projects and interventions in specific areas such as Health, Agriculture, Science among others relying on information from Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
She encouraged the management of the Statesman to consider the advantage of the location of the office of the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) and apply for funding to address financing gap in operations. The Minister also urged them to allow their staff to participate in the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme to build their capacity.
While she reiterated the government’s commitment to continue to support and create an enabling environment for the media, she also urged them to unanimously support the Broadcasting Bill to regulate the industry.
According to the Management of the Statesman, the huge cost of operations is a major challenge. Whiles they welcomed the capacity building programme, they appealed to the Minister to expand the scope to accommodate more of their members in the industry.
