The Minister for Information, Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar has assured the media of government’s commitment to supporting and promoting media freedom and access to information.
She emphasized that government is committed to disseminate information accurately and transparently to educate and inform citizenry on government activities.
The Minister made the assertions when she embarked on a familiarization visit to Media General to engage management on its operations and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.
Honourable Abubakar reiterated government’s commitment to intensify sensitisation on the Right To Information (RTI) Law and also ensure that the Broadcasting Bill is laid before Parliament this year. She was optimistic government will explore the possibility of establishing an RTI fund to support the demand chain.
The Group Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Media General Group, Beatrice Agyemang, requested that the RTI law be re-evaluated to ensure its effectiveness in promoting access to information and supporting media freedom.
She also underscored the need to reassess the achievements and challenges of the media industry to identify areas of improvement and opportunities for growth.
The Group COO emphasized the importance of accurate and timely communication by government to ensure that the public is well informed and media outlets have access to reliable information.
She assured the Minister of Media General’s readiness to collaborate with and help the Ministry deliver on its mandate.
