Namibia’s Deputy Minister for Information, Communication, and Technology Ms. Emma Inamutila Theofelus, has paid a courtesy call on Honourable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as part of her visit to address the annual Trade Fair in the Volta Region to promote youth entrepreneurship within the framework of AfCFTA.
The meeting discussed measures to strengthen bilateral trade relations between Namibia and Ghana, particularly in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Additionally, the meeting analyzed the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation and shared ideas on measures to tackle the menace as well as the implementation of information-related laws to facilitate information dissemination in both countries.
Bilateral trade
Ms. Emma Theofelus underscored the significance of utilizing technology to boost trade and stressed the need for African nations to unite in their digitalization efforts.
She highlighted the mutual exchange of knowledge in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) between Namibia and Ghana.
Information Sector
Ms. Theofelus, mentioned that Namibia has passed its Access to Information Law and was currently in the process of establishing the Office of the Information Commissioner.
Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on his part, outlined the Ministry’s mandate, with a specific focus on the successful implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
He expressed Ghana’s willingness to provide technical assistance to Namibia in the implementation of their access to information law.
Mis/Disinformation
Both Ministers expressed concerns about the role of social media platforms in facilitating the spread of false or misleading information and discussed potential collaborative efforts to address the issue at both the national and continental levels.
