Ghana today, joined about 91 countries to launch the UNESCO National Memory of the World Committee.

The Committee, which is to closely cooperate with Member States, is mandated to identify, preserve and promote access to the world’s documentary heritage and make it available to all, including future generations.

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Minister for Information, Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar described the inauguration as a double feat, noting that the Committee was being inaugurated at a time when the constitutionally guaranteed right to information was fully operational in Ghana.

She encouraged the committee to collaborate with relevant institutions as well as professional bodies like Public Records and Administration Department (PRAAD), the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board for the realisation of this goal.

“The vision of the Memory of the World Programme, encourages us as Ghanaians to fully harness, preserve and protect our documentary heritage and cultural norms with due recognition of the diversity of our people,” Hon. Abubakar added.

The deputy Minister was hopeful that the MOW would serve as a good source of information for both academic and developmental purposes.

Present at the inauguration were the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Helena Asamoah-Hassan, Chief Director and Vice Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Benjamin Kofi Gyasi, Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Mrs. Ama Serwah Nerquaye-Tetteh and a representative from UNESCO.
