The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has said despite the challenges in fighting the coronavirus pandemic in the country, government has been successful largely in its efforts to eradicate the virus.

He said that the high level of success chalked does not bring the fight to an end since the virus still lingers but rather, government is committed to making sure the virus is eliminated in its entirety.

He said this at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday June, 2021 to provide updates on COVID-19 and other health related matters in the country.

“I must say where we are in our fight against the coronavirus, I can even write a success story but we cannot celebrate yet. This is because though we have done so well and our numbers are down, if we continue on that trajectory , like the way we are doing, I believe our numbers can go down even further,” he said.

Ghana’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic has received global commendations particularly amongst African countries. With an effective contact tracing and testing regime coupled with a robust airport testing mechanism, health professionals have been able to help reduce the county’s active cases even as countries worldwide experience a reported third wave of the virus.

However, explaining the reasons behind the effective management of the virus, the Minister attributed it to the investment in the health sector. He said government interventions like the provision of emergency ambulance services in all 275 constituencies and the building of treatment and isolation centres were timely in helping fight the virus.

In addition, the Minister disclosed that plans are far advanced towards the establishment of a Ghana Center for Disease Control for tackling infectious disease. This he said will help in monitoring of infectious diseases in the future and help to contain it.
